UL Lafayette Percussion Ensemble Presents the "Big Bang" 2010 - 03/02/2010
Lafayette, LA- The UL Lafayette Percussion Ensemble will present its 2010 production of the "Big Bang" on Friday, March 12 at 7:30 PM in the Ducrest-Gilfry Auditorium in Angelle Hall. This year’s performance will feature the Afro-Caribbean Ensemble, Brazilian Ensemble, African Ensemble, and Steel Drum Band. In keeping with its mission of performing outstanding percussion literature that fuses the two worlds of classical and ethnic music, the UL Percussion Ensemble will perform Ogoun Badagris by Christopher Rouse, Musical America’s 2009 Composer of the Year. Ogoun Badagris derives its inspiration from Haitian drumming patterns associated with various aspects of Voodoo ritual and the deity Ogoun. Other highlights will include the Marimba Ensemble performing Spanesque Oscillations, reminiscent of the music of Spain, and the African Ensemble’s rendition of the West African Kpanlogo for Marimba and African percussion. The program will conclude with over 40 area high school percussion students participating in a traditional Rio de Janeiro Samba de Escola.
