French Immersion

Students at 26 schools in eight parishes around the state have the additional option of studying in immersion. These programs allow students to take at least 50% of their required classes in French; thereby, students study the same subjects as their non-immersion classmates while also being exposed to the French language. While students completing immersion programs can generally boast of French-language skills nearing those of native speakers, they also generally score significantly higher on standardized tests such as the LEAP or CAT. Other parishes are also working towards implementing immersion programs, mainly thanks to the efforts of parents who want their children to benefit as well. While parents deserve credit for this success, CODOFIL has been fundamental in many ways including: supplying materials, standardizing immersion curricula, work towards the creation of a Bachelor of Science degree in Immersion instruction, and supplying Immersion teachers.

The Consortium of Louisiana Universities and Colleges

One of CODOFIL's missions is to ensure the teaching of French in the elementary and secondary public schools of Louisiana. By extension, this mission requires direct contact with the programs and the professors of French on the university level.

The CODOFIL, Consortium of Louisiana Universities and Colleges was created as an advisory committee to CODOFIL in matters regarding the teaching and preservation of French in Louisiana. Every university in the state is invited to name a representative to the consortium. Other Consortium representatives are the director of CODOFIL, the supervisor of foreign languages at the Louisiana State Department of Education, the liaison to the Louisiana Foreign Language Teachers Association (LFLTA), and the president of the American Association of Teachers of French, Louisiana Chapter (AATF). In addition, the governments of France, the French Community of Belgium, Quebec, and the Maritime Provinces are represented in the Consortium.
